Richard Rollinson<p>We send greetings to all of our gardening friends, both north and south, on the equinox. For us it means more sunlight and warmer days ahead. BeetBear is taking the time to clean off his sign on our tool shed door. <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/BeetBear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeetBear</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Equinox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Equinox</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardeningau" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardeningau</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardeningNZ" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardeningNZ</span></a></p>

Mike<p>Back home.<br>The bus journey to meet Sacha at the gym was uneventful - both buses were on time. I don't understand why, but the new Electric (battery) buses in Leicester seem much more reliable than the smelly diesel buses - and give a nicer ride.</p><p>There had been a collision in the gym car park earlier, so part of the car park was closed which meant finding our car was a challenge.</p><p>We eat the petrol station meal deal at the allotment. Sacha pruned &amp; trained one of the loganberry bushes, that I'd been ignoring, while I broke up clay lumps and raked the bed that I've been digging recently.</p><p>it was chilly but not too unpleasant. Richard Rollinson<p>Ok, here is the most boring video you will see today! I have set up the fan to make the tomato seedlings (and other stuff) wiggle slightly in the breeze. This is supposed to promote stronger seedlings and I've done it for a few years now without actually doing any with/without experimenting.<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Broadfork<p>Vegetation cleared in readiness for fencing. Colin Purrington<p>To rid your garden of common mugwort you have to dig it up and remove the long rhizomes from every clump. It took me two years of hard work to eliminate it. Now other gardeners say, "Oh, you're so lucky that your plot doesn't have that weed." <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/weeds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weeds</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/mugwort" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mugwort</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a></p>
Colin Purrington<p>At my community garden one can choose to be on the tilled side or the non-tilled side. I chose the latter because I can use it year-round (e.g., I sow peas and fava beans in February). But the photos below provide the other big reason: common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). When you have a lawn of this, the very last thing you want to do is plow — every single one of the thousands of rhizome segments will survive and thrive. But that is exactly what will happen this week. I watch in horror every year. <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/mugwort" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mugwort</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/weed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weed</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/nodig" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nodig</span></a></p>
Colin Purrington<p>Weed pit in my plot at the community garden. After it's full I'll top it off with soil and start another one. Keeps the garden tidy and over time becomes organic fertilizer. I know this is likely boring to most but I've noticed that many of my fellow gardeners throw their garden refuse onto the paths between plots. <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/weeds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weeds</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/compost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>compost</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/composting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>composting</span></a> <a href="https://flipping.rocks/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a></p>

Mike<p>Good morning.<br>I've woken up far too early.</p><p>Today looks like it'll be dry and cool here in the English East Midlands, so I'm intending to go to the Petanque club in Leicester's Western Park - it seems ages since I've thrown my balls around!</p><p>Sacha has been making greetings cards with her pressed flowers - and I expect that's going to occupy her some more.</p><p>Tomorrow will be a bit odd because although we are going to make an allotment trip, Kasa is coming to visit and has promised to cook our Sunday meal. The allotment trip needs to be coordinated with her arrival.</p><p>In other news, I've got a really irritating skin tag developing on my neck. One of the joys of ageing!</p><p>Well, have a wonderful weekend wherever you are.</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>allotment</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/petanque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>petanque</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/crafting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>crafting</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/Today" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Today</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/leicester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>leicester</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/weekend" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>weekend</span></a></p>

Yesterday did go to the plot where I spent a couple of hours; cold killed all the black turtle beans.

Filled the feeders, am making a mix of bird food bags; watered the strawberry in the hanging basket; did a fire to get rid of wood and while at it, roasted me some raw coffee.

While waiting for the fire to catch, wrote a few notes on the subject of roasting. Coffee.

Bought by mistake a while ago, a small bag of raw coffee, decided to give it a go roasting on an open fire, using a steel pan and wooden spoon. Turned out quite all right, am having now one such coffee, fresh grind, with a cardamom pod ground in for good measure; a spoon of standard honey.

As I had no idea how to proceed, other than having had in time immemorial an actual hand held coffee roaster... granma stuff.... this time got it half wrong, because put in all the beans; quickly they started browning, quicker than expected, so that to give them at least a shade of brown, most beans are well roasted, black, in fact. Scent not as strong as the coffee beans bought in shops, as for caffeine kick.... a double! YAY!!
